Understanding Cancer Vaccine Treatment Options for Your Dog

A dog's cancer diagnosis can be difficult to process. Identifying and prioritising the best treatment options can often be challenging.

CaniVax is working to support this difficult decision by developing cancer vaccines that aim to help your dog's natural immunity target the disease.

Understanding canine cancer

Your veterinary team will guide you based on your dog's diagnosis, stage of disease, and overall health. Common therapeutic approaches used today may include surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or supportive care.

Each therapeutic option involves trade-offs, as many treatment have minimal effects on the tumour compared to healthy tissue. This is called the "therapeutic window" which is often small with conventional treatments used today. New approaches are required that target the cancer without damaging normal healthy cells. It is here where CaniVax vaccines show superior activity: by targeting the cancer, they provide significant therapeutic effects with limited side effects.

How our cancer vaccines work

Existing canine cancer treatments work by removing tumours, but they also affect normal cells. Frequently, these conventional approaches mean that your dog suffers from horrible side effects.

CaniVax is developing tumour-specific cancer vaccines designed to stimulate the immune response that recognises the cancer. By targeting the cancer, side effects are limited and your dog enjoys a better life. CaniVax vaccines overcome one of the challenges in cancer, that tumour cells often resemble normal tissue, making them harder for the immune system to identify.

By identifying antigens that are specific to cancer cells, and presenting them clearly to the immune system through vaccination, our approach improves the benefit for the dog by targeting the cancer with limited side effects.

Current Status & Veterinary Involvement

CaniVax cancer vaccines are being developed through robust scientific platforms and veterinary clinical studies to understand whether they cure cancer, together with safety, immune response and appropriate dose.

Our current and future vaccines require veterinary support and regulatory permission. Decisions about your pet's care should always be made in consultation with your veterinary professional, who understands your dog's individual circumstances and can advise on the benefit of CaniVax vaccines.
